Jewellery investment is gaining steam in Hainan Province in South China, thanks to the strong demand for gemstones, China’s state news agencyXinhua reported recently.

In May, at one of the province’s premier high jewellery exhibitions and auction events held in the province’s Haikou Free Trade Zone, top-quality loose diamonds and gemstones were offered. Seven items with a combined value of RMB 10.77 million (about $1.75 million) were sold at the event, the report said.

“The event’s results far exceeded our expectations,” Qi Xiaoqing, chairman of Haikou Free Trade Zone Construction Co Ltd, was quoted as saying.

Many quality local buyers showed up at the event, indicating strong buyer’s interest. “Jewellery investment is making inroads in the province. It has become a trend,” Qi said.

The free trade zone in Haikou is also building a diamond trade centre, which is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
