Debbie Ingram

Debbie Ingram, from Appleby, will jet off to the island of Hainan in southern China next week to strut the catwalks alongside contestants from 60 other countries.

For Debbie, a geography student at Edinburgh University, it’s a dream come true.

The 21-year-old said: “Studying geography, I’ve always wanted to go travelling but I’ve never had the money to do it.”

The invitation to travel to China for the Miss Yachting Model International came after Debbie was spotted at Miss Teen Queen UK four years ago.

Although she didn’t win the contest, organisers were keen to take her to an international pageant.

Debbie said: “I’ve been asked to do lots of things, but have always been at school or university and have never been able to go.”

Even this time, it was touch and go whether Debbie would make it out to China.

“I had an exam the same day they booked the flight for me,” she said. “I had to wait to see if they could change my flight and I applied for the visa without even knowing if I could go.”

Debbie already has more than 12,700 votes on the competition’s Chinese website.

She said: “I’m fourth in the votes. The top five after voting closes will be fast-tracked to the final.

“Although I still get to go to China anyway, if I’m in the top five I won’t be worrying if I’m going to get to the final while I’m out there.”

Debbie has modelled forThe Cumberland News and is signed to Boho agency in Newcastle.

She will fly to China next Friday to take part in photoshoots and meet dignitaries. She will wear a dress from The Wedding Barn in Penrith for the grand final on December 3.
