Hainan to open more duty-free shops by year’s end
Hainan province, recently approved by the government to develop as an international tourism center, plans to open more duty free shops for domestic and international travellers, Hainan Provincial Communist Party Secretary Wei Liucheng said at a conference, Nanfang Weekly reported June 21.
Provincial authorities are negotiating with the government to bring in duty-free groups and commercial companies to operate duty-free shops by the end of 2010.
By last year, duty-free shopping was permitted in only one city in the province, in Sanya, according to a separate report by Xinhua.
Hainan is expected to generate tourism revenue of RMB 124 billion in 2020, according to the Nanfang Weekly report.
