The Sanya government will introduce rules to lead the diving sector onto a more orderly development path.

Diving is one of the most popular seawater activities in Sanya. It’s a way to see colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and undersea creatures.

There are 12 diving operators in Sanya that receive about 1.5 million tourists each year. However, the lack of a centrally responsible regulation to manage the sector has posed threats to the coral reefs in the sea areas.

The local government is launching an investigation to try to understand the coral reef ecological system and will introduce laws to better regulate the distribution of diving sites across the city and protect the coral in the region.

According to regulations, diving sites with coral coverage of less than 10 percent are not allowed to open to the public, and diving operators are required to reach their maximum capacity, and develop and implement a tourist flow control plan.
