On August 24, a green campaign to rezone a construction plot to a public orchard was launched at the foot of Linchun Forest Park as part of a citywide “Green Island Project” in Sanya.

Located at the intersection of Hailuo Road and Fenghuang Road, the green plot covers an area of 30 acres and has been set aside to be planted with tropical fruit trees such as longan, orange, litchi, guava, jackfruit, and starfruit.

The green plot was previously zoned for the construction of two twenty-story housing units, which raise public concern that the real estate project would affect the sustainable use of the urban landscape.

Sanya has become a world-class paradise resort after starting off as a little-known coastal town. However, rapid economic and tourism development over the past 30 years is threatening the local ecosystem. Many rare natural resources have been destroyed.

“Sanya is famous for its blue sea water, clean air and lush mountains. If it loses these things, the city will lose its edge” in the tourism market, the government authority said. Measures are being taken to protect the city’s ecology from further damage.

Meanwhile, Sanya has launched a five-year program to build a number of public parks with the goal of increasing the per-capita green space in its urban areas, including Yuechuan Wetland Park, Yinbing Park, the belt-like park along, Fengxinglong Park and Jinjiling Park.
