60 Hong Kong teenagers start back-to-roots journey in Hainan
On August 18, 60 Hong Kong teenagers whose families are originally from Hainan paid a visit to the Sanya Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, to start a one-week-long trip in Hainan.
Hainan is one of the sources of most overseas Chinese migrants, with the majority of overseas Chinese population having ancestral roots in Hainan.
According to historical records, Hainan witnessed two waves of immigration out of China. One occurred during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), after the explorer Zheng He commanded expeditions to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and East Africa from 1405 to 1433. The other wave occurred in the Qing Dynasty after the first Opium War ended in 1842.
