Construction on 150,000-ton berth at Phoenix Island Int’l Cruise Port completed
Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal
Construction on a 150,000-tonnage berth at the Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal in Sanya has been completed and it is expected to welcome its first larger cruise liners, 140,000-tonnage cruise ship ‘Voyager of the Seas’, on August 8th.
Sanya is further developing the Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal with the addition of new and bigger berths to cater to growing cruise market.
In 2015, Sanya has unveiled a plan to upgrade the Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal as a cruise economic zone to gear up to receiving an annual cruise passenger throughput of one million within 10 years.
With the cruise ships getting bigger, the existing berths at Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal do not have the capacity to dock the mega liners of cruise companies like Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruises. During the 2015 Spring Festival holiday, the 150,000-ton Queen Mary 2 liner was unable to dock in Sanya and passengers had to be ferried ashore.
The expansion project of the terminal is under construction. Developments in the pipeline for Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal include the construction of four new cruise berths to accommodate five to seven cruise ships at any one time.
