Sanya sets its sail for more culture tourism

Famed for its sun and sea, Sanya government is now focusing on combining tourism with culture to boost the local economy.

Sanya’s glamour not only lies in its fabulous natural beauty, but also the area’s culture. Sanya boasts two official intangible cultural heritage art forms – the Li people’s firewood-gathering dance and Yazhou folk songs. Other heritage art activities include the Li people’s traditional pottery technique. In addition, the area has a wealth of intricate weaving, dyeing, and embroidery.

Over the past few years, the government in Sanya has been upgrading local cultural attractions to give them a greater appeal to tourists and residents.

The show “Romantic Legend of Sanya” staged at the Sanya Romance Park, with themes of beauty and love, and depicting the island’s natural beauty and culture heritage, continues to attract visitors from home and abroad.

The Miss World Beauty Contest, which has been held five times in Sanya, has greatly accelerated the local economy and promoted the city’s image. This year, the finale of the beauty pageant will be once again held in Sanya in December.

Under the guidance of the Sanya’s government, the city is striving to develop its culture industry even further.

Haitang Bay Dreamland City, a large cultural tourism complex, is the brainchild of the Sanya Haichang Tourism Industry Development Co., Ltd. The project is part of an attempt by the Sanya government to merge tourism with entertainment, a push which has great influence on Sanya’s tourism transition and development.

The government has ordered the complex construction to be fast-tracked. Sanya’s government is determined to build the city’s reputation while upholding local cultural traditions.

It is hoped that mixing traditions with state-of-the-art projects will bolster Sanya’s reputation as one of China’s must-see cities.
