Sanya takes measures to restore and protect coral reefs
In order to ensure the sustainable development of marine environment, Sanya is taking measures on the restoration and protection work of coral reefs in the city’s coastline.
The excessive fishing, ocean pollution and climate change in recent years have led to the destruction of the ocean environment, so the survival of coral reefs is facing a serious threat. A study showed that in past 30 years the coral cover off Hainan coast fell from 60% to 20%.
The government also proposed conservation policies to help prevent negative consequences from human activities including restricting fishing access and special compensation for marine environmental conservation.
Meanwhile, the government has taken measures to maintain the biodiversity of coral reefs off southeast coast by establishing coral reef restoration bases in demonstration sites.
Besides, the government will continue to monitor the coral reef resources in sea areas of Wuzhizhou Island and Xisha Islands and implant artificial fishing reefs to protect the ocean's ecosystem.
