Sanya will receive more Taiwanese tourists as the mainland Chinese government announced that it would lift entry permit restrictions for Taiwan residents in order to boost exchanges across the Taiwan Strait starting from July 1, 2015.

According to the Sanya tourism development commission, Sanya received a total of 18,700 overnight-stay Taiwanese tourists in the first five months of this year, for a year-on-year increase of 23 percent.

As the Sanya tourism industry has developed, high-end tourism offerings such as MICE tourism, golf tourism, and leisure holiday tourism are rising in popularity among Taiwanese tourists. Additionally, younger tourists have become more common in recent years. Many young tourists are interested in active tours, such as cycling, hot springs and rainforest tours.

Since 2012, Sanya has organized a delegation made up of travel agents and journalists to travel from Taiwan to Hainan each year. Sanya has organized large-scale tourism promotion activities to improve Hainan’s already strong reputation among Taiwanese travellers.

In addition, weekly direct flights between Hainan and Taiwan have been launched, allowing even more Taiwanese visitors to travel to Sanya.
