Diners in Sanya can see smile-coded placards in restaurants to signify how the eateries ranked on food safety conditions and services.

Many catering enterprises, including restaurants at scenic spots and school cafeterias, have been inspected by the Sanya food and drug administration to evaluate their cleanliness and services.

After the rating, the catering enterprises are issued smile-coded placards bearing a big smile, slight smile, or unsmiling face, according to their rating.

Under the system, restaurant operators are required to have the smile-coded placards easily visible to all customers.

According to officials, the ratings will help encourage restaurant owners and managers to improve quality of services rendered to local residents and tourists.

The Sanya government has also set up an official website at http://fda.sanya.gov.cn/ for the operation and management of the catering industry in the city, to help popularize qualified restaurants or stalls and announce rewards and punishments.
