In May, the continuous high temperatures and little rainfall in Sanya have caused severe power and water shortages across the city.

The accumulated rainfall in Sanya is around 70 millimeters so far since January, 50% less than the volume in the same period of past years.

The decline in rainfall has greatly affected the storage capacities in many large reservoirs in the city. The low water availability also affected irrigation, leaving crops to wither from the blistering sun and severe drought.

Currently, the daily water shortage for urban use in Sanya has reached 20,000 tons, mainly concentrated in Shengli Road and Nanbianhai Road.

Weather authorities said the situation is expected to be eased as the city enters its rainy season in July.
