Sanya has become one of the most popular tourist cities after starting off as a sleepy fishing village 27 years ago.
Sanya is assisted by its unique tropical resources and the city’s new approaches to tourism have helped boost development.

Since 2010, Sanya has been transforming from a sightseeing-type destination into a leisurely holiday destination. A batch of emerging tourism products have been launched, including islet tourism, yachting tourism, cruise tourism and medical travel tourism.

Sanya has been recognized as on the leading edge of China’s yacht economy. The city has a total of 3 marina clubs, offering more than 1,133 berths for yacht docking. The number of registered private yachts in Sanya has exceeded 240.

In recent years, the number of cruise ships visiting Sanya has been increasing since the establishment of Sanya‘s homeport business. Statistics from the Sanya Port Administration shows that 460 cruise ships docked at the Sanya terminal, bringing more than 800,000 passengers so far.

As medical tourism is emerging as one of the fastest growing segments in the global tourism industry, Sanya has also begun to attract international travelers seeking traditional Chinese medicine treatments.

The Sanya TCM Hospital has been promoting Chinese therapies such as acupuncture, massages and cupping therapy to attract tourists. As of this March, the hospital gets around 30,000 overseas customers a year, mainly from Russia and Central Asia.
