Sanya is boosting its cruise ports in a bid to position itself as a major hub for international cruise lines.

The Phoenix Island port’s first cruise terminal, an 80,000-ton level berth, was put into use on a trial basis in November 2006.

The Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Port is also expanding its infrastructure construction, which will expand the number of cruise berths to 5.

After completion of the 4 berths, the Sanya site is expected to become Asia’s largest cruise homeport complex and could accommodate 5-7 large cruise ships at one time.

The annual passenger throughput at the Phoenix Island Cruise Terminal is expected to hit 1 million over the next 10 years, said Zeng Xianyun, the President of Sanya Phoenix Island Development Co Ltd.

“It would a big incentive for the city’s local travel market to have it serve as the mother port of international cruise lines since high-end tourists will want stay overnight or even longer in the city. That will in turn stimulate consumption in hotels and other tourism industries”.

The rich resources and advantageous location of Sanya have laid the foundation for the city’s cruise development. In fact, cruise travel is now a highlight of Hainan tourism. The Director of Sanya Tourism Development Commission, Mrs. Zhou Chunhua, disclosed that Sanya will roll out more favorable policies, including launching a multi-stop international cruise route, to offer passengers more new and appealing cruise holiday experiences.
