As a new way of integrating leisure travel and medical services, medical travel tours are becoming an emerging market now and Russian tourists seeking a healthcare vacation are on the increase.

In 2013, Sanya received around 170,000 Russian tourists, 80% of which sought medical treatment.

For example, Sanya TCM Hospital has been promoting TCM therapies such as acupuncture, massage and cupping therapy to attract tourists. As of now, about 3,000 foreign tourists are receiving TCM services in Sanya every year, each spending an average of about US$20,000 on their medical services.

Among the healthcare visitors, a large part of them are from Russia. The hospital said visitor numbers from northern Europe are on the rise.

Tourists generally come to Sanya in winter or spring, and spend two weeks receiving acupuncture or other therapies, and also enjoying the beach in the sunshine. Some travel agencies also prepare medical travel packages structured according to the health needs of individual clients and provide flight, visa, accommodation and translation services.
