The second-phase project of Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

Sanya is stepping up to improve its transportation facilities to build itself into an international tourism destination.

The city has a two-pronged approach to the upgrade: actively expanding its international network and its shipping lines, to boost economic development.

Sanya plans to open 7 international air routes this year, in addition to the 60 routes that already existed, and Sanya is now connected by air to a total of 52 countries and regions.

"After direct flights were opened between Sanya and South Korea, more people are coming here – the new routes are very convenient for tourists," said a tour guide.

Meanwhile, Sanya is building a new international port. The Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal is China’s first dock for cruise ships over 80,000 tons. The dock is set to attract nearly 160,000 people each year. Its second-phase project on the port, with an initial investment of 2.3 billion yuan, is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

"After the second phase project is finished, the port will become one of Asia’s largest cruise docks. It will be able to dock up to five cruise liners at the same time and will contribute positively to Sanya’s overall tourism upgrade initiative," said Zeng Xianyun, chairman of Sanya Phoenix Island Development Corporation.
