Sanya ranked third in the environmental ranking of China’s “green urbanization” in 2014, following Shenzhen and Xiamen, according to the reports.

Among 289 prefecture-level cities in China, Sanya was the third city in the environmental ranking, while Beijing took first place for the overall ranking and the “environment and society” ranking.

The index weighs the significance of sustainable and ecological development for all cities in China in regards to multiple aspects, such as the environment, the local economy and society. For this reason, Beijing and Shanghai ranked first and second for their overall green urbanization efforts, despite the worrying air pollution there.

A report released last week unveiled that Sanya’s environmental condition in 2014 was at a favorable level, with 302 days of good air quality.

An earlier report issued by the country’s Ministry of Environmental Protection showed that Sanya ranked first nationwide in terms of air quality.
