The main source of pollution in Sanya River’s water is urban sewage. In response to the worsening situation, a series of anti-sewage pollution measures have been launched to protect the marine ecosystem and improve the environment of Sanya River.

According to the Land and Environment Resources Bureau of Sanya, sewage is being released into Sanya River due to poor rainwater and sewage diversion systems in the city. Waste and sewage from nearby hotels and residential buildings and garbage from the upper reaches of the river are also to blame for the pollution.

Meanwhile, the garbage and pollution generated by the fishing boats in Sanya River also have had a direct impact on the water conditions of the river.

According to the local government, reconstruction of the city’s aging rainwater and sewage diversion systems is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of October in 2015.

Measures will also be taken to reduce pollution in the river by introducing ways of stopping garbage being dumped into the river.
