According to the Sanya Industry and Commerce Bureau, a seafood restaurant involved in cheating customers has had business suspended and was kicked out of the tourism market recently.

The owners of Yelin Seafood Restaurant in Sanya have been detained and fined 200,000 yuan for defrauding customers.

During a regular inspection of the seafood market, the tourism authorities noticed their unlawful behavior, and as they looked into the case they found intentional fraud and serious violations of price regulations.

The owners of the seafood restaurant admitted that they had agreements with taxi drivers and tour guides on rebate rates. During the period between December 8th 2014 to February 9th, 2015, once taxi drivers or tour guides brought visitors to the restaurant, they got kickbacks equaling 40% of the customers’ total spending at the restaurant.

In recent years, Sanya has launched regular crackdowns on price-gouging by revoking licenses and issuing heavy fines for businesses that are found to have cheated customers, a move Sanya hopes will calm public outrage following a series of scandals.
