In January, Hainan recorded over 9 million tons in handling capacity in major ports of the province, up 10.1% year-on-year, and coconuts became the commodity with the most import volume for the province.

Haikou Port saw an increase of 6.2% in container handling capacity, and the most active categories of bulk commodity were recorded as stone, wood, drinks, grain, coconuts and paper. Yangpu Port saw an increase of 31.1%, mainly driven by a surge in sugar exports and crude oil imports.

In recent years, Hainan has had an annual production of 200 million coconuts, which can hardly meet market demands. The low production has forced coconut-processing enterprises to import coconuts from other countries.
