Lengthy traffic jams have already been spotted in Sanya downtown, especially on the elevated roads, days before the arrival of the Spring Festival holiday.

With the approaching of the holiday, the number of tourists joining self-guided tours in Sanya is increasing. Statistics showed that the daily average traffic volume on roads in Sanya city center in recent days was about 250,000, while the figure was even recorded reaching 300,000. Most of them drove from other regions in China, like Heilongjiang and Guangzhou.

The city is expected to see 200,000 vehicles in self-guided tours during the holidays, bringing about 800,000 tourist arrivals, a 15% year-on-year increase, city traffic officials said recently.

In response to the traffic problems on important holidays, the authorities have proposed improving the road infrastructure as well as improving management on non-Hainan registered vehicles to encourage more people to use public transportation when traveling.
