Sanya authorities announced a ban this week on Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone promoting the sales of expensive incenses to visitors at temples in the scenic spot.

The scenic spot is required to stop selling incense to the visitors and its non-religious venues are required to remove its incense burners, according to the notice.

Besides, the scenic spot is encouraged to designate free incense-offering sites in which every worshipper can get one or three green incense sticks for free to show their devotion.

The notice also states that any temple staffs related to the religious activities, tour guides or travel agents are not allowed to force or play tricks to cheat tourists to purchase incenses in and outside the scenic spot.

The Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, a Buddhism-style theme park in Sanya, is one of the large-scale national 5A-level Scenic Spot in Hainan. The scenic spot is famous for its Nanshan Temple and 108-meter-high Guanyin Statue. The scenic spot’s manager said the attraction sees nearly 4 million tourists each year.
