Air pollution concerns have prompted Sanya authorities to ask its residents to set off fewer celebratory fireworks during the upcoming Spring Festival.

"To improve air quality and create a favorable environment for you and your family members, please set off fewer fireworks or no fireworks in order to reduce emissions of pollutants," said the local environmental protection authority.

Setting off firecrackers and fireworks during the Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb 18th this year, is an old tradition.

To reduce accidents and the impact on citizens’ lives, Sanya restricts fireworks to within certain areas on public holidays.

Between February 18 and February 24, 2015, fireworks displays are allowed to be organized in Haitang Bay, Rose Valley Square in Yalong Bay, Dadonghai Square and Luhuitou Square from 6:00pm till 12:40am the next day.
