The third leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 started on January 3rd, 2015 (Beijing local time), with the fleet setting sail for Sanya from Abu Dhabi but without Team Vestas Wind as, their badly damaged boat is still currently being assessed for repairs.

A Sanya delegation, led by Vice Mayor Mr. Deng Zhong, arrived in Abu Dhabi on January 2nd to watch the in-port race. The delegation also visited the Race Destination Village to learn from the experience of the Abu Dhabi Stopover.

The third leg of the 38,739nm race, which started on October 4 in Alicante, Spain and visits 11 countries and every continent, promises to be one of the most hazardous legs of the event. The boats will need to navigate the 500nm Malacca Strait which divides the Indonesian island of Sumatra and Malaysia.

According to the organizing committee, the fleets are expected to begin arriving in Sanya, the 4th stopover of Volvo Ocean Race, on January 24th. The Volvo Ocean Race fleet will stay in Sanya until February 8th when it will then set sail for Auckland in New Zealand.
