Sanya bans use of non-degradable plastic bags from January 1st, 2015
The Sanya Government recently announced that all supermarkets, retail shops, scenic spots, hotels, shopping malls, and other retails spots are required to stop providing non-degradable plastic bags from January 1st, 2015, and is calling for people to use biodegradable plastics instead.
This landmark step taken by the local government will have long term benefits to control the spread of plastic bag waste and enable shopkeepers to comply with the environmentally-friendly packaging demands in the market.
The single-use plastics do not degrade easily and can lead to long-term and latent ecological and environmental problems, causing soil hardening, water pollution, and can even reduce crop outputs.
Besides, the local government will launch an overall inspection on manufacturers across the city and an effective mechanism will be designed by the authorities to promote the use of biodegradable plastics. The manufacturers who fail to do meet the new requirements will face disciplinary penalties.
