Flying to Hainan to escape the chilly winter has become a seasonal trend for Chinese seniors from the northern cities as they can bask in the warm sunshine during the normally cold months.

It is the fourth consecutive year for Mrs Wang, who is 69-years-old and lives in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, to fly to Sanya as temperatures drop to start her migratory life.

Rising demand by Chinese seniors for a better quality of life during the cold season has prompted a growing number to flock southward as well as the booming of retirement property business catering to the senior market.

Compared to the soaring house purchase prices, renting a short-term apartment is becoming a popular option among senior tourists who come to Sanya to spend their winter holiday.

Many suburban areas, such as Haipo Village in Phoenix Town of Sanya Bay, are dominated by seniors during the yearly migration period.
