Sanya is applying for national marine ecological model area status, according to the city’s marine and fishery bureau.

Sanya covers an ocean area of over 3,500 square meters and is graced with 19 gulfs of various sizes. The length of Sanya’s coastline is 259 km, of which there are 40 islands surrounding it.

Compared with other coastal cities, 97% of the offshore area in Sanya is in clean condition, making the region especially suitable for the further development of a marine economy.

The factors for the marine ecological model areas consist of Sanya’s economic development, resources usage, ecological protection abilities, marine culture and urban system guarantee.
