Sanya is planning to construct a new offshore airport in the near future. It is estimated to cover an area of 28 square kilometers and cost 100 billion yuan to build. The related proposal has been submitted to the State Oceanic Administration for approval.

Benefitting from a thriving tourism market, the passenger throughput at the Sanya Phoenix Airport has enjoyed rapid annual growth. From 2004 to 2010, the passenger volume growth rate has seen a year-on-year increase of 25%.

As of September 8th, the passenger throughput this year at Sanya Phoenix International Airport once again hit 10 million, 46 days earlier than last year, setting an all-time record.

With a designated annual passenger handling capacity of 1.5 million originally, the Sanya Airport has undergone multi-phase expansion projects to accommodate the growing number of tourists.

After years of administration research, Hongtang Bay has been preliminarily chosen as the site for the airport’s construction and the new airport is expected to be built on an offshore artificial island created by reclamation.
