‘graceful women’ event

After decades of buttoned down uniformity wearing shapeless Mao suits, it might be understandable for China to have a different view of International Women’s Day.

But perhaps lessons in grace, poise and femininity were not quite what its Western feminist organisers were expecting.

More than 1,000 women attended the official ‘graceful women’ event in Haikou, in Hainan province, southern China, for instructions in how to be more ladylike.

Students were taught how to sit modestly in a revealing, Suzie Wong-style, slashed to the thigh modern version of China’s traditional cheongsam dress.

Later they learned how to dance gracefully in both traditional and Western styles.

"We want to make the women of the world more graceful and elegant. The world would be a happier place with more beauty," explained one organiser.
