In Sanya, the world’s largest duty-free mall, which is set to open on September 1st in Haitang Bay, is in the midst of transforming Haitang Bay into a world-class tourist resort destination.

Haitang Bay was once a town of fishing villages, but is now home to 22km of construction work allowing the area to soon boast 32 high end hotels with over 15,000 guest rooms.

Hailed as the National Coast of China, Haitang Bay is so far the largest tourism development zone in Hainan, covering a planned development area of 100 square meters.

In 2005, Sanya announced an ambitious plan for Haitang Bay and began to build it into a National Coast, with construction starting in 2008. Currently, 10 high-end internationally-recognized-brand hotels have opened for business on the beautiful coastline, including the Sheraton, Conrad, Renaissance, Doubletree by Hilton, and Kempinski, with the number of hotel rooms reaching 4,200.

In the first half of this year, the average occupancy rate of these high-end hotels reached 54%, indicating that the travel market in the region is beginning to rise.

Besides, construction work on a number of other hotels, including a Shangri-La, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Wyndham, Fairmont, and Indigo is currently underway.

Tourism promotional and marketing campaigns have also been launched both domestically and internationally to further increase the recognition and reputation of Haitang Bay
