Unlike previous years, affordably priced moon cakes are proving more popular than expensive brands among Sanya shoppers as the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches.

Due to the Central Government’s rules against using public funds to buy luxury moon cakes as gifts, fewer people appear to be buying expensive moon cakes or other pricey gifts before this year’s festival.

Several major supermarkets in Sanya have reported that sales of moon cakes with simple packaging have been high this year.

“In the past, well-known moon cakes, which sold for nearly 300 yuan per box, were the most popular ones, but this year moon cakes for about 100 yuan per box are selling better,” said a supermarket saleswoman in Sanya.

“As for the moon cakes priced at more than 500 yuan or even 1,000 yuan, there are no customers coming to ask about those moon cakes.”

Moon cakes sold individually are also more popular this year than in previous years, local sales staff said.

“They are very popular. Many families actually cannot eat a whole box of moon cakes, so they seem to be choosing to buy one or two individual moon cakes for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival,” said a saleswoman at the Wanghao Supermarket in the Sanya International Shopping Center.
