Haikou to build tram network and BRT system
The Haikou Transport Bureau has developed and submitted a preliminary plan for a tram network and a BRT system in the area.
According to the plan, the Tram Line 1, which is divided into two phases (Binhai Section and Binjiang Section), is expected to begin construction in the coming year.
Line 1 (Binhai) will stretch from the New Port to Baishamen Park in Haidian Island, passing through Binhai Avenue, Changdi Road, and Renmin Avenue. In the second phase of construction a line (Binjiang) will also be built from Baishamen Park to Meilan Airport.
Line 1 will cover a distance of 24.67 kilometers with 33 stops. The average distance between stops will be 771 meters, and the line is expected to open in 2017.
Meanwhile, a bus rapid transit (BRT) system is also in the works for the Haixiu Road area. Together, these new transportation measures and methods are expected to considerably improve traffic conditions in Haikou.
