According to the 2013 Report on the Environmental Quality of Sanya, most of the seawater quality maintained a good rating on the whole, except water quality in some water sections saw slight pollution last year.

In 2013, the water quality of 95% of the country’s territorial waters met national standards, and the water quality in Sanya’s offshore areas reported quality that was higher than the national standards.

In terms of offshore seawater pollution, the annual water pollution in offshore areas under the monitoring program was higher than that of the previous year.

In 2013, the polluted offshore areas were mainly concentrated in the estuary of Sanya River, Hongsha Port, Tielu Port and Ningyuan River. Most of the waters surrounding Sanya’s near-shore pollutant discharge outlets failed to meet national standards.

Dissolved oxygen, inorganic nitrogen and active phosphate were the main pollutants.

The Sanya Marine and Fishery Bureau conducted supervision for a period over marine waste along the waters of Luhuitou Bay and Sanya Bay and found that plastic garbage was the top garbage source in the ocean in these areas.

Besides, human activities, marine entertainment and offshore fishing were found to be the main pollution-emitting sources along Sanya’s coastal areas.
