Sanya city government and Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center (MRCC) of Hainan province coordinated the drill, which was undertaken by MRCC of Sanya. The drill focused on the features of ferries in Sanya, including large size and various items.

The main content of the drill included crisis management, how to abandon ship, transferring the wounded and searching for people in the water. Organizing passengers and decreasing injuries and property loss also were practiced. The drill lasted 2 hours.

The Sewol ferry disaster served as the model for the emergency that started the drill. The performance of MRCC and ferries were shown and tested. According to data, 17 ferries attended the drill and staff from 20 travel agencies participated.
