Recently, concern has been raised among residents about the increase in sudden deaths of wild macaques at Sanya’s Luhuitou Peninsula

Mrs Wang, who lives in the nearby community in the area, said that the site has been always in good ecological condition, so it’s not surprising that travelers found wild macaques there.

However, residents have been reporting their discovery of dead monkeys in the area since late April. As of now, there have been at least 5 monkeys found dead.

These cute little monkeys often hang out around the community and tourists also grab the chance to have their photograph taken with the cute animals, said Mrs Wang, and she hopes that the Sanya government could provide effective protection for these lovely monkeys.

According to the Sanya Wild Animal Protection Station, the majority of the symptoms reported include gastrointestinal or liver disease but the specific cause for the reported illnesses and deaths is still under investigation.

The Luhuitou Peninsula is situated close to the Huoling Nature Reserve on the west side of Dadonghai beach, a natural habitat for nearly one hundred macaques
