At about 12 pm on May 4th, a spectacular solar halo was seen surrounding the sun in the sky over Sanya City.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” many locals said they had never seen such a beautiful and rare solar halo before.

Meteorologists explained that a solar halo is a celestial phenomenon which can occur during the summer and autumn seasons when the temperature is high. These kinds of visual effects come about from the refraction of light that occurs when the light from the sun penetrates the ice crystals of high-altitude clouds.

The fantastic scene lasted about one hour and local residents and tourists marveled in wonder and rushed to take photos.
