Sanya has seen a boom in tourism during the 3-day May Day holiday with tourists flooding into the city’s major scenic spots.

During the 2014 May Day holiday, which ended on May 3rd, Sanya’s 5 scenic spots received 97,800 tourists.

Sales at the Sanya Duty-free Shop were recorded at 22.03 million yuan.

In response to the shorter holiday, trips of up to 3 days were not only attracting mainland visitors but also island visitors. Travel agencies have offered many interesting short-term tour products targeted at local groups.

According to statistics, the average hotel occupancy rate reached 48.82%, down 1.18% over the same period of 2013 while the number of hotel rooms saw a year-on-year increase of 4.49%.

The Sanya Phoenix International Airport received a total of 712 flights, with the total volume of passengers reaching 97,331.

The toll-free policy in Hainan has brought on a massive increase in self-driven tours in Sanya. According to the Sanya Transport Bureau, Sanya received more than 710,000 tourist vehicles, among which 260,000 were from outside the island, accounting for 36.5% of the total figure.
