Sanya has seen 17 water-related accidents in the city in the first quarter of this year, the Maritime Bureau announced on April 13th.

Among them, a total of 4 separate drowning accidents were reported in the water in Sanya Bay, with 8 deaths and 1 rescued. The drowning deaths exceeded 50% of total lives lost.

Authorities said most of the drowning accidents have occurred between the hours of 6 pm and 8 am, the hours of highest tidal movement in the ocean.

The tidal movement, often involving strong currents, may pose safety risks to swimmers. Apart from protective measures, including swimming areas and life saving equipment, the bureau warns the public not to swim during these especially dangerous hours.
