The installation of screens on the 24,000 sewer and drainage manholes across Sanya city is progressing smoothly and the whole project is expected to be finished by the end of this April.

The safety hazard caused by missing manhole covers has caught the public's attention since an accident in Shenzhen on March 30 when a 16-year-old student fell into an uncovered sewer during heavy rain.

During the heavy rain season, the screens aim to prevent passers-by from falling into a manhole that is relatively deep which could put a person's life at risk.

According to the Sanya manhole management authority, currently 7,750 screens and 11,250 have been installed on the manholes on major roads in Hexi and Hedong District, along with around 5,000 more which will be finished on Yuya Road and Xinfeng Road by the end of April.
