Layers of green algae recently appeared along the Dadonghai beach, one of most popular beaches in Sanya.

The beach section between the Landscape Beach hotel and Shanhaitian Hotel, which spans a length between 200 and 300 meters, has been covered with green algae causing many tourists to stay away.

An expert with the Sanya Environmental Monitoring Station said it’s due to the seasonal wind and currents, and that similar events have occurred along Sanya’s beaches since 2004. He said it is a natural marine phenomenon and does not have any negative effects on the ocean environment or people.

The expert also said the algae blooms would disappear naturally when the weather and the conditions in the ocean change.
