4 ship-shaped fishing reefs have been put in the seawater areas off Wuzhizhou Island at the end of last year.

Sanya is planning to build 8 marine ranches to realize the sustainable development of the fishery industry. The project, with an investment of 265 million yuan, will be completed within the next 10 years.

The 8 marine ranches, covering a sea area of up to 3,200 hectares, are located in Wuzhizhou Island, Dadonghai, Sanya Bay, Hongtang Bay, and West and East Islets.

So far, Wuzhizhou Island and Hongtang Bay are the first two demonstration sites among the eight where 20,000 cubic meters of artificial reefs have been developed.

Wuzhizhou Island is the first provincial fishing reserve pilot site. In 2013, the government in-vested 8 million yuan in the construction of 4 ship-shaped fishing reefs, which were put in the seawater areas off Wuzhizhou Island at the end of 2013.

Meanwhile, the government freed a variety of fish seedlings at the coral reefs in East Islet to protect the marine bio-diversity in the area.

According to the local fishery authorities, the development of marine ranches will help to transfer the traditional operations of the fishing industry and boost the regional economy, bringing additional jobs to fishermen
