According to an expansion scheme published by the Sanya Urban Planning Bureau, the section of road linking Xinfeng Street and Heping Street, will be expanded in the near future, as the city seeks to reduce vehicle pressure congestion downtown.

Starting February 26, many trees on both sides of the road began to be relocated to make way for the expansion project.

According to the plan, the 1,023-meter-long Xinfeng Street–Heping Street section of Jiefang Road will be expanded from 20 meters to 27 meters, with two-direction four-lane runways, including a 3.5-meter-wide non-vehicle lane in each direction.

As one of the busiest roads in Sanya, the former narrow road section has been causing frequent traffic bottlenecks due to the multi-fold increase in vehicular traffic. The road expansion project has become inevitable to create more space for the smooth movement of the vehicles during rush hour with a long-term perspective.

The widening project is scheduled to be completed at the second half of this year.
