As heavy smog continues to blanket China’s north and central regions, on Monday Sanya became the best city among 161 Chinese cities in terms of air quality, according to real-time data released by the Division of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The city’s air quality index (AQI) rating was 41, which was considered the best on the ranking list, and the levels of PM 10 and PM 2.5 being at the Hedong and Hexi monitoring stations were 34 and 16.

At the same time, the AQI in Xingtai of Hebei Province reached 500. The reading was at the top of the AQI monitoring meter and indicated hazardous pollution.

To better protect the air in Sanya, the government is drawing up an emergency plan to tackle heavy pollution, which is expected to be activated within this year.
