Sanya is planning to improve traffic conditions in the coming years by adding more parking lots and enhancing the utilization of underground space.

Sanya has 96,000 cars of its own and the city received 100,000 additional cars driven into the city from outside which caused serious traffic jams during this year’s Spring Festival holiday.

Along with heavy traffic congestion, the lack of parking lots has been a development woe for the city. More than 3,600 new emergency parking spaces were added recently at several major scenic spots to ease the parking problems across the city during the festival.

According to a statement issued by the city planning department on 17th February, the “Plan for Parking Problems in Sanya’s Urban Area and Coastal Area” has now gained approval from the local government. The plan will be carried out by 2015.

The plan has suggested enhancing the utilization of the existing parking lots and establishing 1,500 more parking spaces for vehicles in 11 major areas
