In recent years, the Sanya government has paid great attention to the orchid industry and increased its efforts to support the industry financially and with favorable policies.

The head of the Sanya Municipal Forestry Bureau said that with the excellent natural conditions, the orchid-growing area in Sanya has increased from the original 20 mu over 10 years ago to 2,850 mu by the end of December 2013, ranking 1st in all of Hainan province.

At present, the tropical coastal city of Sanya owns 10 orchid plantation enterprises, 15 orchid farmer professional cooperative societies, and has 2,000 orchid growers.

In 2010, the Sanya government issued the Sanya tropical orchid industrial development plan between 2011 and 2020 in order to further improve the development of the city’s orchid industry.

According to the plan, the orchid-growing area in the city is expected to reach 6,000 mu, and there will be 180 million branches of cut-orchids and 12 million potted orchids to be cultivated, with total sales estimated at 870 million yuan by 2015.

By 2020, the orchid-growing area in Sanya is expected to reach 50,000 mu and the city will develop into the largest tropical orchid industry center in China, combining the production, trading and sightseeing of orchids.

In addition, Sanya is building a reputation in the international orchid industry after successfully hosting the International Orchid Show for 8 consecutive years, and the flower is becoming a new name card of the city.

The 8th China (Sanya) International Orchid Show is to be held at the Orchid World Cultural Tourism Zone in Sanya’s Tianya Town from January 8th to 14th, 2014.
