Recently, many tourists and residents have complained that discharge pipes are being constructed near the Xiaodonghai area at Luhuitou Peninsula.

A pipe was found extending into the sea and two more pipes were under construction nearby.

Xiaodonghai, which is widely known as the Sanya Coral Reef National Natural Reserve, is a state-level natural reserve built to protect the regional eco-system of coral reefs as well as marine biodiversity.

Many citizens pointed out that the condition of the coral reefs in the shallow regions of water have been destroyed due to local overdevelopment of the coast and due to pollution, both largely a result of increased human activity in the area.

Currently, relevant departments in Sanya have set up an investigation on the matter to attempt to stop the destruction of the reefs.
