A group of teenagers arrived at the Li Pottery Heritage Village in Tianya Town on December 8th to learn Li pottery techniques, a technique which is facing extinction due to a sharp decline in its number of masters.

Teenagers visited the pottery hall which displays items such as vats, basins, jars, bowls, pots, and so on. With great interest, they began doing some simple pottery products after receiving basic training from 5 professional practitioners.

Li Pottery is part of the Li people’s cultural identity and a feature of their unique ceremonial items at festivals and at important life events. However, with rapid industrialization, traditional Li pottery production has been gradually replaced by machines.

To boost protection of the valuable traditional culture, the pottery technique of the Li people was listed on Hainan’s intangible cultural heritage list in 2010.

At present, Li pottery production can be found at three natural villages in Tianya Town and only 65 female elders are involved in the pottery industry
