To further develop the city as an international tourist Mecca, Sanya’s government is spending millions of yuan to accelerate the construction of high-quality public toilets across the city for the convenience of locals and tourists leaving sanitation staff around the city complaining about uncivilized behavior.

A cleaning worker responsible for a public toilet at the Fenghuang Road said she has reminded users of the behavior expected but still found toilet paper, cigarette butts thrown to the ground, and facilities damaged, all of which caused extra work for the workers at times.

High quality toilets send a signal that Sanya will enhance the construction of other infrastructure in the city, but the cleanliness, or lack thereof, of the public toilets reflects the level of civilization and management skills of the city as well.

Currently, Sanya has 102 public toilets in the city including 60 mobile toilets and 42 traditional toilets. These public toilets are all offered to residents and tourists for free. A force of sanitation workers is employed to clean the toilets in line with the public toilets management standards.
