China’s 11.11 Online Shopping Festival originated five years ago when Alibaba offered promotions on its many e-commerce sites on China’s unofficial ‘Singles’ Day’ holiday 11th November.
 
According to statistics from Alibaba Group, Sanya topped the ranking list among China’s online shopping cities in mobile transactions during the 11.11 Shopping Festival on November 11th.

During the biggest one-day shopping event of the year, the total amount of mobile transactions on Taobao Marketplace soared to 5.35 billion yuan, 5.6 times that of last year. A total of 35.9 million orders were placed via mobile devices, accounting for 21% of total trading.

Amongst online shopping cities in China, Hainan ranked 28th in the country as its online spending hit 190 million yuan, with the majority of orders being placed by mobile devices. And the amount of mobile transactions in Sanya accounted for 36.5% of the whole province.

Single and married consumers spent RMB 35 billion (US $5.7 billion) on the day this year, up a whopping 83 percent from the previous year.
