Public drinking fountains in many public areas across Sanya are being misused, according to a report by the Sanya Daily.

Public drinking fountains are machines equipped with a water purification system, which visitors can drink freely and safely from.

The city installed 24 public drinking fountains in its public areas, including in parks and scenic spots in 2012, with an investment of over 400,000 Yuan.

However the drinking fountains are reportedly being used by visitors to wash their hands and even feet, which isn’t their intended use.

Some of the machines have also allegedly been deliberately damaged by nearby vendors operating food and drink stalls as the public fountains have affected their business.

According to a worker in Dadonghai square, quite a number of visitors are also unwilling to drink the water from the machines due to safety concerns.

Local relevant departments have said measures will be taken to promote the public drinking fountains, and to strengthen their management and maintenance.

Relocating some of the public drinking fountains will also be considered.
